National Origin Discrimination

Federal, New York State, and New York City law make it unlawful to discriminate against or harass employees because they are from a particular country or part of the world, because of ethnicity or accent, or because they appear to be of a certain ethnic background (even if they are not).

Therefore, discrimination against an employee because they are Muslim, Arab, South Asian, Sikh, Japanese, Chinese, German, etc. is unlawful. Such discrimination can result from targeting an employee because of (for example) their language or accent, clothing, or citizenship.

Often, national origin discrimination overlaps with race or religious discrimination.
